(May 9, 2026 -- New York, NY) This year marked the 5th annual Japan Parade and Street Fair, which celebrates Japanese language food and culture, and Japan's relations with New York City. It's typically held annually on the second Saturday of May along Central Park West from West 81st Street to West 67th Street.
For the first time ever, Japan Parade unveiled its official mascot, Happi. Happi was created by well-known Japanese manga artist and illustrator, Acky Bright. Acky Bright was the Grand Marshall of this year's Japan Parade. Happi's design feature a combination of Japanese and New York City elements including New York City's colors orange and blue, the traditional Japanese happi coat, and red cheeks that replicates the red circle on the Japan flag.
Earlier this year, fans were provided the opportunity to name Japan Parade's official mascot by entering the Mascot Naming Contest. The winner of the contest received a 4-day pass to the 2026 AnimeNYC, original illustration from Acky Bright and merchandise featuring Happi.
Winner of the Mascot Naming Contest, Natsuki Watanabe developed the name "Happi." The name "Happi" was inspired by the traditional Japanese happi coat while spreading happiness and celebrating the connection between New York City and Japan.
